"Anísio was a prophet of knowledge, culture and social transformation, particularly of social transformation. He was one of the most cultured men in this country, and at the same time the least exhibitionistic of the cultured men in this country. All of his intellectual work is motivated by his wish for social transformation. He was, above all, an educator committed to the practice of education and administration. And because of this practice, which called for theoretical knowledge, he wrote his books. He was not a theoretician turned activist. He was a man permanently followed by this dialectics of doing and knowing. Remember that, during the years of ostracism, his practice was that of a miner, an export trader, a businessman and a translator of works he deemed relevant."
